Here are images of my piece for the "Landscape" exhibit at Blue Lucy in which artists were to able to use any media on a horizontally oriented wood panel. I was intrigued by the concept of the show, and took it on as a challenge to myself, since I had never done anything remotely like a landscape before. Luckily, I had just spent ten days on my first solo trip to one of my favorite cities out west, Santa Fe, so I had many beautiful photos of the landscape there. I fell in love with Santa Fe's mountains when I was there a couple summers ago, and really enjoyed it this last time.
I got to explore more of the city and its surrounding natural landscapes this trip. The photograph I used for this piece were from Bandelier National Monument which are home to some mysterious cliff dwellings. I couldn't get enough of the ladders, the nooks and crannies, the shadows they created and how chalky the rock was. The tallest ladder there came at the end of the hike through, and I admit, I scraped some of the cliff wall off into a baggie so I could keep part of it with me in Florida. this mysterious place had a lot of hidden images in the shadows of the rock cut out. I drew on this and a mirrored image when I was working on this piece. I have a hard time just leaving a photograph as a photograph, so I painted on top of a printed mounted photograph. I looked at the mirror image to guide me as to what I should be painting, and I saw a spine and pelvic bone. I had never painted on a photograph before and like the outcome. I hope to explore mirrored photography more, as well as painting on photographs.
